The Cleveland Cavaliers have to figure out what to do with this roster.
They have the talent to compete at a high level, and they just had a 64-win regular season with three NBA All-Stars.
Then again, after watching the same story unfold year in and year out, it’s easy to understand why some people want them to break up the roster.
This has been a lingering concern among the fan base, and with rumors circling about Jalen Suggs and Darius Garland, it’s hard to argue that the Orlando Magic point guard, arguably less talented, is a much better fit in Cleveland next to Donovan Mitchell.
However, analyst Ken Carman isn’t so sure about that, saying he doesn’t want to give up on a more talented player.
“I’m just very afraid to move on from the talent that I know Darius Garland has for a ‘fit,’ for guys who are playoff guys. And what I’m hearing from Terry [Pluto], you know what, if he mentioned fit, I gotta mention fit now, and maybe I’m not seeing it for what it’s worth, that, ‘Hey, you might need to move off from this comfort of Darius Garland’ knowing that he has talent,” Carman said.
That would make sense if Garland were in his first or second season, but that’s not the case.
He will enter his seventh year in the league, so at this point, he should either be entering his prime or close to a finished product.
If that’s the case, the Cavs can’t expect much more from him.
He doesn’t play good defense, and he hasn’t shown up or been healthy when it counts.
Talent is meaningless unless it’s put to good use, and sometimes, fit is everything for a basketball team.
As good a player as Garland is, perhaps he needs a change of scenery to be at his best.
