The Cleveland Cavaliers had another disappointing ending to the season.
Given the way this team has fared in the playoffs with this group, it’s easy to understand why some fans and analysts would rather see the team hit the drawing board and move on from some of their core players.
However, Evan Dammarell of ‘Right Down Euclid’ doesn’t seem to feel that way.
In his latest column, the renowned analyst claimed that the Cavs might be better off just making marginal moves to keep building around this roster:
“So while the offseason may be filled with speculation, the reality is far simpler: just because the Cavs can trade Jarrett Allen or Darius Garland doesn’t mean they should. A quiet, calculated summer might be the boldest move they make and perhaps, the smartest one,” Dammarell wrote.
Granted, the Cavs looked like a legitimate NBA championship contender for most of the season, and it’s not easy to give up on a 64-win team.
Nevertheless, we can’t look at this roster or this season in a vacuum.
This core of players has been given countless opportunities to show that they can get the job done together, and they have failed time and time again.
The same woes came knocking when it mattered most, even with a different coach.
The harsh truth is that both Jarrett Allen and Darius Garland have been missing in action in the playoffs, whether it’s due to subpar play or injuries, and the sample size is big enough.
The Cavs have more than enough talent to take care of business, but sometimes, it takes more than that to win at the highest level.
It’s not going to be easy, and it might turn out to be a mistake, but judging by how things have gone down, it’s easy to understand why some people would rather see a roster overhaul.
