The Cleveland Cavaliers are coming off a tough end to the season.
They were supposed to be one of the last teams standing, but they couldn’t win more than one game in the second round of the playoffs.
Unfortunately, that has become a trend with this team.
That’s why Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com believes it’s time to discuss the harsh idea of moving on from some of their star players.
“So I just think when you’re at a point that the Cavs are at with their roster, the way the season ended earlier than anybody expected, and with their salary cap situation, you have to start considering some of these alternatives and you have to start having very difficult conversations, conversations that are going to be painful, maybe even subtractions from the roster that are going to be painful,” Fedor said.
The Cavaliers won’t have much money to add free agents and could struggle to retain their own this offseason.
That’s the risk that comes with having four players signed to big-money deals.
The Cavs are very talented on paper, but most of their core has struggled to take a leap when it matters the most.
Evan Mobley is arguably their most important player, and he should be considered untouchable and off the table in any potential trade offer, even one that could get them Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Donovan Mitchell is their leader and best scorer, and given his steep salary and long history of postseason shortcomings, moving on from him might not be easy or in their best interests.
That’s not the case with Jarrett Allen or Darius Garland.
Executive Koby Altman refused to give up on this core last offseason, but the sample size is big enough to pull the plug now.
