The Cleveland Cavaliers have to consider all their options right now.
Outside of Evan Mobley and maybe Donovan Mitchell, all of their players should be considered expendable.
Darius Garland was a non-factor again in the playoffs, and he’s struggled in every elimination game he’s played so far.
Though he’s an efficient three-level scorer with impressive court vision, Garland’s big-game performances have left plenty to be desired, and he’s struggled with injuries and physicality in the past.
With that in mind, Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com made a case for the Cavs to trade him to the Orlando Magic for Jalen Suggs.
βI understand that Jalen Suggs is not as good of a player as Darius. I understand that Jalen Suggs is not as naturally gifted or talented as Darius, but he brings a lot of stuff that this team would benefit from,β Fedor said. βHe can handle. He can distribute, he can guard his butt off, he can shoot from the perimeter, he can drive, and he gives you more size, more toughness, more tenacity.β
Truth be told, this could be a huge win for both teams.
The Magic need to add some floor-spacers and 3-point shooters, and they wouldn’t need Garland to lead the way with Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero as their go-to guys.
The Cavs, on the other hand, would get a pass-first point guard with strong defensive tenacity.
Suggs takes pride in getting stops, and he would bring the kind of grit and toughness that Cavs executive Koby Altman talked about after the latest playoff disappointment.
The Cavs can run their offense through Mitchell and Mobley, with Suggs pulling the strings, grabbing rebounds and knocking down an occasional 3-pointer.
The Cavs need to explore any opportunity to get better, and after watching Garland struggle under the bright lights, it may be time to move on from him.
