After blitzing the league during the 2024-25 NBA season, the Cleveland Cavaliers were eliminated in the 2025 NBA Playoffs by the Indiana Pacers in just five games.
The Cavaliers entered the series as the favorites, but a mix of injuries and poor two-way play allowed the Pacers to take control of the matchup early and they never looked back.
This is a massive disappointment for Cleveland who looked the part of a contender in the regular season, but now faces several questions in the offseason.
The core of Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen is one of the best in the NBA, but the four of them struggled against Indiana for various reasons.
There’s no reason to break up the group given how well they performed when healthy, but there’s legitimate doubt whether or not this core has what it takes to win a title.
Analysts like Earl Mauldin questioned whether or not Cleveland’s core is complementary enough to win a title via 92.3 The Fan.
“From a skills standpoint, the Core Four, they have skills. But, to me, do the personality and the skillset complement the other guy’s personality and skillset? If all these guys are the same characteristically, and they are similar in terms of their attributes and skills, then are we really in a situation where we have a team that complements one another?” Mauldin asked.

To Mauldin’s point, there is a bit of concern when it comes to the personalities and temperaments of the group, though on the court it still results in strong scoring and defensive showings.
Perhaps the answer is to retool the supporting cast, but for now the Cavaliers have to mull over another letdown of a season.
