The Cleveland Cavaliers‘ season ended in disappointment, forcing both the organization and its players into a period of reflection.
Evan Mobley likely finds himself contemplating what more he could have contributed as the Cavs process their unexpected second-round exit from the 2025 NBA Playoffs.
Though Mobley won Defensive Player of the Year, former NBA player Kenyon Martin questioned his willingness to play through injury when the team needed him most.
“You don’t suit up bro? Give me something? We’re already down Darius Garland, we know he ain’t healthy,” Martin said of Mobley on “Gil’s Arena.” “We know this going into it, he missed Game 1. So him playing in Game 2 is slim and none. Evan Mobley, we rely on you nightly. It ain’t just your points. It’s your defensive presence, it’s you being out there, it’s something that we could use. When they didn’t play in Game 2, I’m like, ‘Oh man, they ain’t going to beat nobody, ain’t got no heart.'”
Martin raised a concern that resonated with many observers.
If Mobley was healthy enough for Game 3 against the Indiana Pacers, why couldn’t he push through for Game 2?
The critique gained particular weight considering DeAndre Hunter competed with a dislocated thumb suffered in Game 1, while Mobley sat out with an ankle sprain. Garland battled a persistent toe injury that carried over from the first-round series.
Going forward, the Cavaliers face important decisions despite their regular-season success.
Their 64 wins represented the franchise’s best performance without LeBron James, with Kenny Atkinson earning NBA Coach of the Year.
While the foundation appears solid, the Cavaliers must address several issues if they hope to advance beyond their second-round ceiling in future playoff appearances.
