The Cleveland Cavaliers’ dream season came to an end with a 114-105 loss to the Indiana Pacers in Game 5, sealing their elimination with a 4-1 series defeat.
What made this collapse particularly painful was how it contradicted their stellar 64-18 regular season, which featured three separate winning streaks of 12 games or more.
Yet when the conference semifinals arrived, their momentum evaporated completely.
Both at home and on the road, the Cavaliers found themselves without answers.
This troubling pattern caught the attention of ESPN Cleveland’s Brian Windhorst, who identified what he considers a ‘massive problem’ plaguing the team.
“I did not think mental toughness would be an issue. They just really didn’t put their best foot forward, and they couldn’t hit a shot. They end up 29% on 3s. I mean, that’s their game. Their game is to hit the three, but their game is also to move the ball and to create the three-pointers. And they just quit. They quit moving the ball,” Windhorst said.

He noted that Indiana’s defensive pressure proved overwhelming, with Pacers defenders picking up Cleveland ball handlers as far as 54 feet from the basket.
This aggressive strategy completely disrupted the Cavaliers’ offensive rhythm.
Their typically fluid ball movement disappeared, replaced by stagnant possessions that often ended with rushed shots after minimal passing.
The contrast between the teams became increasingly apparent throughout the series, suggested the analyst.
The Cleveland Cavaliers lost all three games played on their home court, including two devastating collapses where they surrendered commanding leads of 19 and 21 points.
While Indiana displayed remarkable resilience, fighting back from significant deficits in hostile territory, Cleveland repeatedly faltered in crucial moments.
For a team that dominated the regular season with its energy and cohesion, this sudden breakdown in mental fortitude raised serious questions about their playoff readiness.
