The Cleveland Cavaliers want to have a long, prosperous future with Donovan Mitchell.
Obviously, things have gotten off to a great start with the star player, but no one knows how long it’ll last.
NBA great Kenny Smith spoke with Cleveland 19 News about the possibility of trading Mitchell in the future, and he warned the team to be very careful.
“You better get a guy who’s top three at his position otherwise, you’re just wasting your time and trying to rebuild,” Smith told 19 News.

Right now, Mitchell has two more years plus a $37 million player option on his contract.
Of course, he has the ability to sign a new extension right now, but both the Cavs and Mitchell aren’t rushing to make that happen.
From a financial standpoint, it makes more sense for Mitchell to wait at least until the next offseason before he signs any paperwork.
If he has another terrific season, he can earn himself a lot more money.
The Cavaliers aren’t going to pressure or rush Mitchell, but they are definitely very interested in retaining him with a new deal as soon as they can.
During his first season with the team, Mitchell produced 28.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.4 assists.
If the Cavaliers feel that Mitchell doesn’t want to remain, they could choose to create a trade around him.
But as Smith said, if they don’t handle that situation well, then they will be giving away a lot with nothing to show for it.
The Cavaliers obviously want to keep Mitchell, and that will be their first goal.
Not only is he a superb player but creating a trade that gets enough in return for him would be very difficult.
