The Cleveland Cavaliers are currently trying to recover from a disappointing and short run in the NBA playoffs.
They are attempting to figure out what their future looks like, including their relationship with Donovan Mitchell.
According to one diehard Cavs follower, the team should be concerned about Mitchell’s player option, which is starting to loom large.
“The elephant in the room not being talked about (yet) is Donovan Mitchell’s player option in 2027-2028. The player option shifts risk to the team and forces talks after next year whether they can continue or pivot to recoup value before he opts out. Next year looms large,” RealCavsFans wrote on X.

Mitchell is contracted with the Cavaliers through the 2027-28 season, but that final year is a player option.
That means he could opt out of playing in Cleveland the summer before and could make his way to another team.
Obviously, that would greatly complicate the team’s plans and leave them without their most valuable player.
People need to start thinking about what happens if Mitchell sticks around, and if he doesn’t.
This next year is going to be a pivotal one for the Cavaliers.
They just had one of their best regular seasons ever, but fell short in the playoffs.
That means they have an awful lot to prove in 2025-26.
They need to not only have a lot of success during the regular season, but they also need to do much better in the playoffs, too.
And during it all, there will be questions about which players will remain and which will move.
If the team doesn’t perform splendidly, you can bet that more and more people will talk about Mitchell’s player option and his choices.
Right now, his player option is far off in the future, but it may quickly sneak up on the Cavaliers and their fans.
